1. Employment in Canada recovered to near pre-pandemic levels in September 2021

Canada's economy gained 157,000 jobs last month, bringing the employment rate to near pre-pandemic levels. Statistics Canada's Workforce Survey has captured the Canadian labor market for the week of September 12-18. This week, several Provinces have asked residents to present proof. vaccinations to be allowed to go to certain non-essential locations such as gyms or restaurants.

The employment rate is the number of employed people as a percentage of the population aged 15 years and over. In September, Canada's employment rate was 60.9%, 0.9% lower than February 2020's rate as a result of population growth. The unemployment rate fell for a fourth straight month, to 6.9%, its lowest level since the outbreak of the pandemic.

2. Immigrant employment

The employment rate of recent immigrants continues its upward trend, reaching 71% last month. Although the overall population of new immigrants has not increased over the course of the pandemic, the number of recent immigrants working in certain industries has increased. Specifically in professional, scientific and technical services, finance, insurance, real estate.

Immigrants who have been in Canada for more than 5 years have an employment rate of nearly 59%, down about 1% from September 2019. Those born in Canada have an employment rate of about 61%, down 2% in same time frame.

3. Service production jobs

Employment rate in the service manufacturing sector surpassed pre-COVID levels for the first time. The increase was led by public administration, information, culture and entertainment, and professional, scientific and technical services. In contrast, some industries such as accommodation and catering services have not yet returned to the level of employment as in February 2020. This is partly because the industry has been heavily affected by quarantine measures due to the epidemic.

Overall, the goods manufacturing sector was little changed, because it lost 94,000 jobs between April and June. Manufacturing and natural resources were the two exceptions when it came to job growth in September.
