Job vacancies in Canada for the second quarter of 2021 hit a record high, according to Statistics Canada's quarterly employment report. From April to June, job vacancies in Canada were 4.6%, the highest since comparative data was released in 2015. This high rate was influenced by an increase in vacancies. vacancies during that time, plus a decrease in staffing.

There were a total of 731,900 job openings last quarter, nearly 26% more than in the same period two years ago.

Statistics Canada does not measure vacancy rates for the March-September 2020 period, so the earliest comparable data for this period is from 2019. Also, average wages is $22.85 per hour, $1.55 higher than in 2019.

Since before the pandemic, Canada has experienced a labor shortage, which is partly addressed through immigration. However, with the lowest number of new immigrants arriving in Canada in 2020, this has only exacerbated tight labor market conditions.

  • Retail: Canadian job vacancies in the retail sector amounted to 84,300 last quarter, particularly in food and beverage stores, building materials and garden supply dealers.

  • The manufacturing sector has a record number of vacancies with 65,900 vacancies. The vacancies are distributed across several sub-sectors, with the largest proportions being food production and wood product manufacturing.

  • Dining and Accommodation: an all-time high number of vacancies in Canada in food and lodging services. The number of vacancies in this field is up to 89,100. The increase was entirely attributable to the food and beverage service sub-sector, which is vulnerable to public health restrictions.

The average hourly wage for this job was $14.55, up more than 6% from the same period in 2019.
