RECRUITMENT DEMAND AT NOVA SCOTIA GROWTH

22/08/2022
Canada has released a government study highlighting the occupations impacted by the pandemic in Nova Scotia. Many Canadians have lost their jobs or reduced their hours as a result of public health measures to limit the spread of the virus. The sectors most affected include the hotel and restaurant sector. However, some of the jobs below have increased demand in this Province.

1. Business related to finance and administration

Many of these jobs can be conducted remotely and therefore are not negatively impacted by pandemic-related health measures. Some occupations are in high demand for recruitment such as:

_ Financial and accounting auditors (NOC 1111);

_ Administrative staff (NOC 1221);

_ Administrative assistant (NOC 1241);

_ General office support staff (NOC 1411).

2. Natural & Applied Science

These jobs have remained relatively healthy throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people have been able to continue working remotely during the lockdown. In particular, the number of people working in jobs related to computers and information systems is steadily increasing in Nova Scotia in positions such as:

_ Information systems analyst and consultant (NOC 2171);

_ Software engineer and designer (NOC 2173);

_ Computer programmers and interactive media developers (NOC 2174);

_ Deck officer, shipping (NOC 2273);

_ User support technician (NOC 2282).

3. Health jobs

One in 10 of the workforce in Nova Scotia works in health-related industries. Demand for these jobs existed before COVID-19 due to the province's aging population and the growing popularity of home care. The pandemic has further increased demand for the following positions:

_ Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses (NOC 3012);

_ Licensed practical nurse (NOC 3233);

_ Massage therapist (NOC 3236);

_ Nurse assistants, orderers, and patient service associates (NOC 3413).

4. Trading, transporting and operating equipment

The pandemic has not had a big impact on construction jobs. Professionals must commit to physical distancing requirements and to use personal protective equipment (PPE) in place. Less specialized construction jobs such as carpenters and masons are in high demand and this is expected to continue in the near term.

Heavy equipment operators may also be in high demand because of an increasing number of highway and private construction projects. Long-haul truckers were in demand before the pandemic. After the epidemic, this demand has increased significantly:

_ Carpenter (NOC 7271);

_ Truck driver (NOC 7511);

_ Delivery and courier service operators (NOC 7514);

_ Operators of heavy equipment, excluding cranes (NOC 7521);

Skilled Builders (NOC 7611)
