Immigration Canada has announced it will provide $100 million in funding to ensure settlement services for newly arrived Canadian immigrants to meet the country's needs during the pandemic.
Funding will be deployed over the next three years through the Department of Immigration's SDI program to support new projects of settlement service providers such as needs assessment, information provision, training language training, skills development, employment-related services and community connections for new immigrants.
“These projects will help find ways to better integrate newcomers and assist with settlement as the country recovers from the pandemic,” IRCC said in a statement. During the pandemic, many settlement services have moved online. SDI funding will help IRCC identify the types of services Canadian immigrants will need, while taking into account the growing reliance on online service delivery.”
“Settlement services play a fundamental role in Canada's immigration system. From creating jobs, to finding housing, to language training, these things have made the integration of newcomers much easier. During this challenging year and a half, I'm sure everyone needs support in one way or another. And the difficulties for new Canadian immigrants will be even greater. These new SDI projects will help us enhance and improve our settlement services so that every newcomer can reach their full potential here.”
In 2020, IRCC selected 78 projects. Among them, there is a project to study the feasibility of applying artificial intelligence to the planning of settlement plans for immigrants. Also, another notable project is to connect newcomers with employers in rural communities before they arrive in Canada to see if this encourages them to settle in these areas. or not.
The majority of newcomers who received settlement services said they found it helpful and suitable for their needs. They point out that these services have enhanced their knowledge of life in Canada, improved their English or French skills, prepared them for the Canadian labor market, and helped them connect with organizations. in their community.
Between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2019, more than one million new Canadian immigrants received immigration assistance from the government.
