Canada climbs to second place in the Nation Brands 2021 rankings for the first time in history, thanks to high scores in immigration and investment, as well as other categories.
The Nation Brands Index measures the prestige of countries around the world. This year, they compared 60 countries and drew survey results from 60,000 interviews. Last year, only 20,000 interviews were conducted in 50 countries.
Countries are ranked based on quality assessment in six categories: exports, social governance, culture, people, tourism, and investment and immigration.
Canada ranks first in immigration and investment, assessing its ability to attract immigrants, foreign workers, and international students. The index also measures the quality of life and the business environment.
Canada also leads in social governance, assessed on equity and merit, but also committed to global issues such as peace, public affairs, law enforcement, poverty, and the environment.
Third, Canada also holds a high position for the human factor, which measures the capacity, openness, friendliness and tolerance of a country.
Canada maintains its stable ranking in the remaining three criteria: exports, evaluation of a country's products and services; tourism, assessing the level of tourist attraction of a country; and culture, assessing a global perspective on a country's heritage and promoting contemporary culture including the arts and sports.
Over the years, Canada has consistently been in the Top 3 of the Nation Brands rankings. This year, Canada rose to second place, behind Germany, which has maintained its leading position for the past five years.
