After graduation, international students who want to continue to work in Australia should apply for a Temporary Graduate visa – subclass 485 (Post-study work visa) and can stay from 18 months to 4 years, depending on the level.
As a condition of this visa, the graduate's degree must be in the field that Australia is in demand. At the same time, work must be sought in a field that resembles or is closely related to the industry in which the degree was obtained. For example, if a graduate with a bachelor's degree in commerce could not be in business.
Graduate students apply for a 485 visa to stay and work in Australia
This type of visa is divided into two types: the Post-Study Work Stream Visa and the Graduate Work Stream Visa.
This visa stream allows graduates and their families to live, work, travel and study in Australia for 2 to 4 years if they have graduated from an Australian institution within the last 6 months. .
Length of stay will depend on qualification: Bachelor's degree can stay for 2 years. For a master's degree, international students who want to settle down Australia can stay for 2 or 3 years; PhD degree can stay for 4 years.
However, if the degree is lower than a bachelor's degree, e.g. level III certificate, diploma, graduates are not eligible for this visa.
This 18-month post-study work stream visa allows graduates and their families to live, work, travel and study in Australia if they graduate from an Australian institution within 6 months.
Unlike the Post-Graduate Work Stream Visa, international students wishing to settle down Australia are eligible for this visa even if the qualification is less than a bachelor's degree, for example a diploma. At the same time, graduates must pass a vocational skills assessment on the Skilled Occupations List.
The Post-study Work Visa – (subclass 485) is the first “ticket” required to stay in Australia to work for up to 4 years. At the same time, this is the time for international students who want to settle down Australia and accumulate experience to be eligible to apply for other types of temporary and settlement visas.
The type of visa that can continue to replace the 485 visa can be the Sponsored Skilled Visa. This path consists of 3 types:
Temporary Skill Shortage visa – subclass 482 for skilled foreign workers who are sponsored by an Australian business. Depending on the nominated occupation, the applicant will be in Australia for 2 to 4 years.
Employer Nomination Scheme visa – subclass 186 allows highly qualified and skilled workers sponsored by businesses in Australia to work and settle here permanently. Employees can stay for 5 years.
Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa – subclass 494 is a temporary skilled visa sponsored by an employer. This business must be in a designated area of Australia. Typical are remote areas with few residents such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The period of stay in the designated area under this visa is for 5 years.
