2. Changing the occupation limits for the skilled Canadian immigration program

3. Occupations eligible for the Agri-Food Immigration Pilot

Eligible occupations and industries under the pilot include:

Meat product manufacturing;

  • Retail butchers
  • Industrial butchers
  • Farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers
  • Food processing labourers

Greenhouse, nursery and floriculture production, including mushroom production;

  • Farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers
  • General farm workers
  • Harvesting labourers.

Candidates for the Agri-Food immigration pilot must also meet additional eligibility requirements such as:

  • 12 months of full-time, non-seasonal Canadian work experience in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in one of the eligible occupations;
  • a Canadian Language Benchmark level 4 in English or French;
  • the foreign equivalent of a high school level education or greater; and
  • an indeterminate job offer for full-time, non-seasonal work in Canada, outside of Quebec, at or above the prevailing wage.

AFIP complements Canada's existing suite of economic immigration programs, which includes the Atlantic Immigration Program, the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program, the caregiver pilot program, the Skills Strategy Global, Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Program. These changes are an important step in meeting long-term labor market needs, continuing to promote the skills and labor needed in the agriculture and food sectors. It also widens the path to permanent residency for experienced workers in these industries and their families.
