Within 2 years from February 28th, 2023, the Government of Canada continues to maintain the policy that foreign citizens who are in Canada to travel and visit relatives are allowed to receive work permits without having to leave the country. Previously, to be able to work legally in Canada, candidates needed to apply for a work permit in Vietnam.
Additionally, those who have obtained a work permit within the past 12 months can also request a temporary work permit to start working for the new employer more quickly.
During a period of severe labor shortages, this policy opens up an additional option for employers in Canada from foreign visitors.
Visitors can continue to apply for a work permit right in Canada
This conversion policy is an easy opportunity for applicants as tourists, but applicants need to meet the following conditions:
Have valid visitor status in Canada on the date of submission.
Receive an LMIA job offer or an LMIA-exempt job offer
Meet all other standard acceptance criteria
Employers must apply for a Work Permit by February 28, 2025.
Candidates who currently have tourist status but have had a valid work permit in the past 12 months can follow special instructions, to get temporary work authorization and start working for their new employer. before their work permit application is completed.
To obtain a work permit is to apply for a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). After having a positive LMIA and a job offer letter, the candidate can apply for a Canadian work permit right in Vietnam.
Or for those who are currently visitors in Canada, they can also apply without leaving the country when receiving the LMIA from the business owner.
Besides, international students in Canada can also get Work Permit in many streams, including:
Off-campus Work Permit allows international students to work part-time off-campus for a maximum of 20 hours/week and full-time while on vacation.
Co-op Work Permit is granted to students studying in Canada in which an internship is included in the program (this internship cannot make up more than 50% of the study program). The work permit for study only allows students to work within the framework of the study program, and cannot be used to work outside.
Post Graduation Work Permit: This is a Canadian Work Permit for international students after graduation. The condition for this permit is that the student attends a university/college in Canada and has completed this course of study for at least 8 months.
Work Permit is considered a “passport” for immigrants to legally work in Canada. After receiving the Work Permit, the applicant will have the opportunity to get Permanent Residence and live permanently in Canada with the whole family.
