First, these changes could benefit Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) and Temporary Work Skilled (subclass 457) visa holders. Immigration Minister Alex Hawke said it was a special program to recognize skilled migrant workers who have chosen to stay in Australia during the pandemic. There are about 20,000 cases that could benefit from these changes, concentrated in the medical and hospitality sectors.

A ministry spokesman said the changes announced on November 25, 2021 will be implemented gradually from December 2021 to July 1, 2022. In addition, migration agent Ruby Fowdar, chief executive officer of Immigration Australia, said migrants temporarily stranded outside Australia due to the pandemic were the hardest hit. But they are in a "good position" on the road to Australia's Skilled regional immigrant visa (subclass 191).

In particular, skilled migrants in Australia temporarily have the opportunity to apply to the country for three types of skilled migration visas following changes to section 48 of the Migration Act.

Section 48 applies to those who have had their visas refused or canceled since their last entry into Australia.

On November 13, 2021, Mr. Hawke agreed to temporarily add the following visas to the list of exempt visas: 491, 494 and 190.

2. Visa changes for Australian immigrants bring more opportunities

Temporary graduate (subclass 485) visa holders who are stranded overseas and are unable to visit Australia due to the pandemic will also be able to apply for an alternative visa.

This change will allow current or former Temporary graduate (subclass 485) visa holders that expired on or after February 1, 2020, to reapply for a new visa with the same validity period from July 1, 2022. .

The 485 visa is issued to recent international graduates with skills in specific occupations, allowing them to continue working in Australia.

The changes to the Temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) are to increase the length of stay for Masters by Coursework graduates from 2 to 3 years and from 18 to 24 months for the Graduate Work Stream.
