The latest announcement from the Canadian government said that the country's immigration target for this year is nearly 432,000 people. This is a significant increase from the original target of about 411,000 people, as part of a coordinated strategy to increase the number of annual Canadian immigration arrivals over the next three years, with 447,055 and 451,100 new immigrants aimed at this year. 2023 and 2024.
Canada's ambitious immigration plan for the coming years is not only good news for skilled workers, but international students also benefit from the program.
With a friendly immigration policy, Canada has always been one of the favorite destinations for international students compared to the US and UK. One study found that more than a third of students (39%) said Canada was their top study abroad destination last year, followed by the US and UK (17%) and Australia (16%).
International students in Canada who have completed their studies for a certain period of time at a designated learning institution (DLI) are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
PGWP holders can temporarily stay in Canada to work for the duration of the permit corresponding to the length of the study program anywhere from eight months to a maximum of three years.
However, for permanent residency, PGWP holders must apply for Canadian immigration, the most common of which are the Express Entry and PNP pathways.
A Canadian statistic shows that 3 out of 10 international students who came to Canada after 2000 became permanent residents. Currently, Canada's 2022 immigration policy is considered to have many advantages for international students and students who want to study here.
Express Entry is an online system created to manage Canadian immigration applications. Under this system, candidates can submit an EOI (expression of interest) online profile to the Express Entry Pool. The records will then be scored and ranked on the system. The top-ranked candidates will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to apply for permanent residence.
As of 2021, Express Entry will only apply to skilled workers and graduates in the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP). This is likely to change in 2022 with the government targeting applicants from around the world.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also called for more permanent immigration pathways for international students through Express Entry. Therefore, the opportunity for international students to settle in this country after graduation is becoming easier and easier.
Besides Express Entry, Canada is about to launch a new nomination program called the Municipal Nominee Program (MNP), which is different from the Provincial Nominee Program - Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
Currently, most PNP applicants are concentrated in major metropolitan areas, driving up the cost of living. The creation of the MNP is aimed at attracting highly skilled workers and graduates towards smaller and medium-sized communities in Canada's small provinces and territories.
The MNP is still in the planning stage. However, it has been confirmed that at least 5,000 new permanent residences will be dedicated to this program.
Several other goals have been highlighted by Prime Minister Trudeau in the new immigration mandate letter, including:
First, it's about reducing the time it takes to process an immigration application. In particular, the backlog due to COVID-19 will be quickly resolved.
Second, the government is planning to waive the application fee for Canadian citizenship.
Third, he emphasized that the government will determine ways to formalize the status of undocumented workers in Canada.
At the same time, Canada will continue to improve its system of rules for hiring temporary foreign workers. Specifically, the government will simplify the renewal of work permits and set up a hotline for workers.
